Traditional unfinished and prefinished solid hardwood flooring cannot be installed over concrete since it must be nailed to a wood subfloor. However, more versatile engineered wood flooring can be placed on top of a cement slab. Servi-King Carpet in Levittown, Pennsylvania, also known as Elegant Carpet & Flooring, offers a large selection of hardwood flooring appropriate for various applications. We have a customer-friendly mobile showroom, too.

Engineered wood

Manufactured planks usually have a plywood base under a layer of hardwood. In other words, a floor constructed with engineered wood looks the same as a time-honored solid wood floor. It can even be refinished once or twice if it becomes worn. But manufactured wood is designed differently than solid wood. The base is made up of layers of plywood situated in different directions, and therefore, planks tolerate moisture and changes in humidity.

The installation method, as well as the makeup of the planks, make concrete a viable subfloor. Edges of planks are designed to fit together. These interlocking planks need no attachment to a subfloor. Instead, the floor floats over the cement slab. Thus, hardwood floors can be installed in basements. Underlayment, or padding, must be placed beneath the floor. Underlayment is composed of protective materials like foam and a moisture-resistant film. Engineered wood works well with radiant heat systems, too.
